Can’t we get just a *little* love?

Growing up in Maryland, and playing baseball when I was young, it was hard not to be an Orioles fan. I have many fond memories of the trips taken by my family to watch them play at Memorial Stadium, and even more recently at the beautiful Camden Yards. During my childhood, the Orioles were also a dominant ballclub in the American League, with their last championship in 1983. Over the past few years, though, I’ve felt like the O’s have had a lot of talented players, but just haven’t been able to get everything to come together for them to be a dominant team (or at least a contender). So this year, it’s very exciting to see my team playing well, playing at the level they are capable of, and seated comfortably in first place in the American League East.

So why is it that when I visit ESPN’s web site to check out the latest headlines, there’s rarely a frontpage headline that mentions the Orioles? There always seems to be something about the Yankees, even though they are one game from being in last place in the same league! I grow tired of the constant attention given to that one particular team, when other teams are proving themselves to be much more newsworthy. Yes, I’m a little biased in my opinion, but the Yankees have had their fair share of the limelight over the past decade, and I feel it’s time to shine the light on someone else. I mean, Brian Roberts is on the highlight reel after every game! We have the second most home runs of any ballclub! We’re 13-4 against our division rivals! What more do you need to do to get a little attention in Baltimore?

Whaddaya say, ESPN? I know you’re listening…

UPDATE: Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. It wasn’t the site’s front page, but the MLB front page had an O’s headline titled “Lucky 7: Roberts, O’s top D-Rays for 7th straight win”. Of course, the Yanks were mentioned above that. Also, the first highlight of the evening on Sportscenter? That’s right, the Orioles beating the D-Rays…
