Daniel Cabrera was flirting with a no-no through 4 and 1/3 innings, but the Red Sox bats came alive and 4 runs were added in the 5th to give them the lead. They wouldn’t look back as the O’s failed to generate any offense after the 3rd inning and lost the game 5-1. Baltimore now looks to face Boston’s top 2 pitchers for the remaining games in this 4-game series. The often struggling Sidney Ponson will faceoff against Tim Wakefield in the first game, and the rookie Hayden Penn will go head-to-head with Matt Clement on Thursday.

A great start to the 4-game series! David Newhan finally had his breakout game of the season and drove in 5 runs to help the O’s beat up on the Red Sox, 8-1. Rodrigo Lopez had another spectacular outing, allowing only 1 run in his 8 innings of work. Lopez started to get into trouble in the 8th, but was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam after giving up the only run of the game for Boston. Newhan belted a grand slam in the 3rd inning, just as it appeared as though the O’s were again going to fail to capitalize on a great scoring opportunity. A great start to the series for the O’s, I hope they’re able to build some momentum with this win, especially since they are facing a division rival and the O’s will have to take on the Tigers (who just beat up on them in Baltimore) after this series.

Bruce Chen pitched another wonderful game for the O’s, yet the bullpen collapsed and threw away a 4 run lead in the 7th to allow the Tigers to sweep the O’s and hand the team their first 3-game losing streak. Steve Reed relieved Chen in the 7th inning, after Chen walked the first batter of the inning, and proceeded to give up two singles, a double, and a home run to allow the Tigers to take the lead. The Tigers were able to add one more run in the 7th, and the O’s were unable to answer. The O’s now travel to Boston for 4 games, and look to end the losing streak.

Hayden Penn made his Major League debut, and pitched fairly well, yet was unable to get the win as the defense behind him allowed 2 unearned runs in the fifth inning, chasing Penn from the game. The Tigers were able to tack on 2 more runs in the eighth off of an Omar Infante home run for the lead and the win. The O’s look to avoid the sweep tomorrow, and avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the season.

This game was a heartbreaker. The Orioles made a valiant effort, but fell short in their attempt to take the first game against the Detroit Tigers. In the bottom of the ninth, with the score 4-3, Palmeiro led off with a double. The tying run was now in scoring position with nobody out. Jay Gibbons was able to advance the runner to third with a groundout to second. Now the tying run was 90 feet away, with 1 out. Surhoff, unfortunately, was unable to get the runner in, and grounded out to second as well. Things were looking bleak. Geronimo Gil followed and Brian Roberts followed, and they both walked. The bases were now loaded, with 2 outs, and the winning run on second base. The rookie Jeff Fiorentino was now at bat. Fiorentino was 0-4 on the night. I thought for sure that he was due, but he was unable to make contact with the ball, and went down on strikes. Ouch.

Tonight is the rehearsal and dinner, and tomorrow is the big day for my sister Jen and her fiancĂ© Nick! I’m not really able to put into words how happy I am for her and the exceptional man she’s going to marry. They are an unbelievable couple, a perfect match, and I know that they’ll enjoy many wonderful years together.
