Gift from afar

So I finally ordered my iPod mini. I’ve been sitting on this decision for so long, just waiting for what I felt like would be the right time to make this kind of purchase. I’m honestly surprised that the prices of iPods are still able to remain so high. The popularity of these portable music devices doesn’t appear to be waning, and with each new model released that adds extra capacity, longer battery life, color screens…when will it end? So I placed my order through Apple’s online store, and took advantage of the free laser engraving to personalize it (since iPod thieving is the latest craze).

Shortly after I placed my order on Saturday, I received an email notice detailing my order, and letting me know that the estimated ship date would be 1-3 business days. So Monday morning, sure enough, I had an email waiting for me that said my iPod had shipped and that a tracking number was provided to track the package. But the sentence that really caught my eye was that “if [my] order is shipping standard freight, it should arrive within 12 days of shipment.” 12 days!? Something didn’t seem right. So I went to Fedex’s tracking site and plugged in my tracking number. The results shouldn’t have been that surprising:

Tracking my iPod mini

It’s kind of disappointing to know that I’m spending a nice chunk of change on an item that probably costs 1/20th of that to manufacture. At least I know why it could take up to 12 days to get here. Considering I also ordered the iPod firewire cable to allow for faster transfer of music to the device, and that shipped from Harrisburg, PA tonight, it’s going to be a long, hard wait for my new toy to arrive…
