Tigers vs. O’s - Game 1

This game was a heartbreaker. The Orioles made a valiant effort, but fell short in their attempt to take the first game against the Detroit Tigers. In the bottom of the ninth, with the score 4-3, Palmeiro led off with a double. The tying run was now in scoring position with nobody out. Jay Gibbons was able to advance the runner to third with a groundout to second. Now the tying run was 90 feet away, with 1 out. Surhoff, unfortunately, was unable to get the runner in, and grounded out to second as well. Things were looking bleak. Geronimo Gil followed and Brian Roberts followed, and they both walked. The bases were now loaded, with 2 outs, and the winning run on second base. The rookie Jeff Fiorentino was now at bat. Fiorentino was 0-4 on the night. I thought for sure that he was due, but he was unable to make contact with the ball, and went down on strikes. Ouch.

A great game overall, but a tough one to swallow.

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
DET 1 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 4 10 1
BAL 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 3 9 0

The O’s record is now 30-17.
