The O’s are in Toronto playing their second game in this 4-game series. Rodrigo Lopez is on the mound for Baltimore tonight. The O’s desperately need a win to retain the small first-place lead they have over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East Division.
@7:15 pm - Unlike last night, the O’s decided they would use their bats against the Toronto pitching tonight, and have jumped out to a 5-run lead in the top of the first. The O’s were actually given an extra out by a fielding error on a Brian Roberts ground ball, and translated it into a bunch of runs.
@8:00 pm - Eli Marrero belted his second homerun in as many games, to extend the lead by 5 in the top of the 4th.
@8:45 pm - We don’t like to blow people out. It’s just not as exciting. So Lopez gave up a 3-run bomb to keep things close, and keep the excitement level up there. Yay.
@8:55 pm - Apparently, Geronimo Gil disagrees with Rodrigo Lopez. After Marrero doubled, Gil decided to pound one over the left-field fence. The lead is back to 4.
@9:30 pm - I’d say that Geronimo can’t stand it when the other team scores. He belted another homerun, this time to deep center, to again restore the lead to 4.

I missed all of that excitement. I happened to look at the ESPN.com Scoreboard later in the evening and saw that the Yankees killed the Devil Rays 20-11, and then remembered hearing the periodic updates during the O’s games that mentioned the Yankees were losing large. It figures they’d come back from a huge deficit but the O’s rarely seem to be able to (ie. last night).
The Red Sox are also rolling right along, winning the last 8 of 9 that they’ve played. I mentioned it several games ago, but I really do sense a change in the tide regarding the standings and who will be sitting atop the A.L. East in the near future. I just hope that when we go to watch the O’s play the Red Sox in September, that they’re still sitting in that #1 spot. It’d be fine with me if the Sox were in second…that would surely make for an exciting game!

O’s game was cool, a little too much drama at certain points. But how about the Yankees game? I had the Gamecast going and was happy when the D-Rays beat up on Randy Johnson and took a 10-2 lead after four innings. And I watched in disbelief when the Yankees scored 13 in the bottom of the eighth. That really sucked.
