It started this past Friday, at night. After having dinner with my family, I was back at my parents house and started feeling a sharp pain in the right side of my mouth. The pain progressively got worse, and eventually began to give me a headache. After several minutes, though, it subsided and I felt perfectly fine.
As the holiday weekend went on, the pain started occuring more frequently, and getting more intense. I started having problems concentrating on anything other than the pain I felt in my mouth. It was driving me crazy. I ended up trying to call my dentist, only to find out that their office is closed until the 3rd of January, and their emergency “number” was a suggestion to call the Emergicare service or Rockingham Memorial Hospital, neither of which would provide the service that I suspected I needed.
Luckily, my wonderful wife had a business card with her for her dentist, and their emergency number was actually answered by her doctor. I spoke with him, and he agreed to meet with me early this morning to check my mouth. The check-up resulted in confirming my suspicion, that I need a root canal performed on one of my teeth. I have an appointment setup for this afternoon to do just that. Wish me luck!
UPDATE (12/27/05 @ 6:30 pm):
I survived!
It was a very simple procedure, and all I have left to show for it at this point is a fat lip (or so it feels). I also have a temporary filling that will have to be replaced with a permanent one at some point during the next week, so I’ll have to eat carefully for a while. All in all, the pain is gone, and I’m happy to be back to “normal”.
