”The Buzz Behind Caffeine”

April 21st, 2005 Interesting Health

My in-laws LOVE coffee. And tea. Whenever we visit, and as the night is winding down, it’s inevitable that the offer for a cup of coffee or tea is moments away. What really surprises me, though, is that they can consume these vessels of caffeine in the late evening and still have no problem getting to sleep a short time later. I’m already quite the night owl as it is, so if I even partake in one cup of coffee late at night, I’ll be wired until the early morn’. So my curiosity was piqued when I saw this article from CBSNews that discusses the science behind why caffeine causes the brain to continue working when it’s normally time for resting. There’s also some helpful tips near the end of the article for how to get better sleep at night. As for my in-laws, I guess I just married into a family of caf-fiends… (har har!)

It figures…

April 22nd, 2005 Software

Of course, right after I submit a post with a mini-rant about Microsoft’s lack of certain abilities in their Internet Explorer web browser, I see this post on Microsoft’s official IE blog discussing the first beta of IE 7 that is expected to be released this summer. And, as you would expect, the first detail they mention fixing in the next version of their web browser is to:

Happy birthday, sweetheart

April 27th, 2005 Meg

I just wanted to wish my wonderful wife a very happy 26th birthday today. I can’t wait to relax with you this evening, and enjoy dinner and a movie together. I hope your day at work goes by quickly and painlessly!

Web site to-do-list

April 27th, 2005 Blog Related

No, not a honey-do list, Meg. :) I’ve come up with some ideas for the site that I don’t want to forget, so instead of jotting down notes in lots of different places with the hope of stumbling across one of them, I’ll just make a list here:

I know, I don’t listen

April 28th, 2005 Me

I probably should pay attention a little more when certain things are being said to me. It’s a problem I have. Actually, I know I’m not the only one that suffers from this horrible affliction. I believe it’s called “selective hearing.” So when my wife told me that I was NOT supposed to open an envelope with my name on it that would appear similar to one that she would receive that would be her birthday present…I guess it just slipped my mind. ;) But I really do appreciate the wonderful gifts that arrived today from mom and Jen, and I thank you both. I just get so jealous seeing Meg ogling over her gifts that I HAVE to open something myself! Yeah, that’s why…

Bow to me, for I can write functional PHP

April 30th, 2005 Plugged In

I’m not sure what that title means. I’m pretty excited that I created a very basic, yet perfectly functional plugin for my blog, though. :) You’ve probably noticed the differing numbers that appear on the header image (or not, if I’ve updated the images already). I’ve created a random image plugin that will generate a random number, append it to a filename, and randomize my header! (I only expect ooh’s and aah’s from geeky types.) Being that this is my first attempt at a plugin, I’m pretty relieved that I was successful. I have LOTS of plans for the site, and it helps if you can create or understand the code that you’re working with to tweak it to your needs. The next step is replacing the placeholder images with better pics…

Can’t we get just a *little* love?

April 30th, 2005 Baseball O's

Growing up in Maryland, and playing baseball when I was young, it was hard not to be an Orioles fan. I have many fond memories of the trips taken by my family to watch them play at Memorial Stadium, and even more recently at the beautiful Camden Yards. During my childhood, the Orioles were also a dominant ballclub in the American League, with their last championship in 1983. Over the past few years, though, I’ve felt like the O’s have had a lot of talented players, but just haven’t been able to get everything to come together for them to be a dominant team (or at least a contender). So this year, it’s very exciting to see my team playing well, playing at the level they are capable of, and seated comfortably in first place in the American League East.

And the streak ends…

May 3rd, 2005 Baseball O's

I missed the Orioles game last night. :( For some reason I had it in my head that they had a day off and were playing on Tuesday (today) on Comcast SportsNet. Apparently, what was supposed to be conveyed in the announcement after the last game was that the next game to be shown on CSN would be on Tuesday. They didn’t actually mention anything about a day off. But see what happens when I don’t watch!?
