More site changes

May 2nd, 2005 Blog Related Plugged In WordPress

I’ve been diligently working on the site over the past few days, trying to implement certain features as well as figure out what modifications I’d like to make to some of the items that are already in place. I’ve added the WordPress Poll system from GaMerZ (just for fun), but I plan on tweaking with that as well. I really don’t know if I want a poll up at all times, so I have to figure out how to modify the code to set time limits/ranges on the polls.

Miguel Tejada is the MAN

May 4th, 2005 Baseball O's

The energy that Miguel brings to the Orioles, and that he exhibits each and every inning, each and every game, is unbelievable. He is definitely a huge part of the reason that the Orioles have the record that they do now (18-9), and why they are sitting atop their division. Unfortunately for me, the game today was played at 3:05 pm, and I was unable to tune in to any of the action. Luckily, my brother called me on my way home from work, and updated me on the exciting events that occurred in the bottom of the eighth inning that led to us winning the ballgame. Miggy showed some of that energy tonight when he ran through a stop sign given by third-base coach Tom Trebelhorn on a double by Sammy Sosa to score the go-ahead run. I don’t think Miguel was willing to let the team be swept by Toronto, and he scored easily on that head’s up play. Let’s go O’s!

Spread the news…

May 5th, 2005 Baseball

New York is playing for last place in the AL East tonight! I know, it’s really not that earth-shattering of a headline, but I read a great article on the Yahoo! Sports section by Dan Wetzel, entitled Bronx bombers that made this O’s fan smile. For a while. I won’t spell out the entire article, but here are a few of the quotes that I particularly enjoyed:

More site modifications

May 6th, 2005 Blog Related Plugged In WordPress

Tonight, I’ve added two excellent plugins to the site to assist in keeping the comments spam-free. Now, I realize that I don’t get an exorbitant amount of traffic (ahem), but I think it’s very necessary to be proactive regarding the threat of spam with any online medium. Since I don’t have any real means of testing the new plugins, though, I’m not very familiar with the interface or error message a user might receive if they’re comment has been flagged as ’spam’. Luckily, I am the admin, and since the site’s userbase is so ‘compact’ and can get in touch with me easily through other means, we’ll see how these babies operate. Or I’ll remove them. :)

Off and running again

May 6th, 2005 Baseball

The O’s played again tonight against the Kansas City Royals after taking Thursday off, and they won 3-1. Though the Royals are in a slump, it was nice to see our offense give Ponson (who pitched wonderfully) some early run support to help him cruise to his 4th win of the season.

Plugged-in and overloaded?

May 7th, 2005 Blog Related Plugged In WordPress

I think I’m getting to the point that I’ve added so many plugins, the load time for generating the pages is a nuisance. I went from around 20-some queries in less than a quarter of a second, to 40+ queries in sometimes 3 or 4 seconds. That’s bad. But we’re still in the early development stages of the site…adding things, removing things, trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. So if you don’t like something that’s been changed, let me know. Conversely, if there’s something you think would be a great addition or a wonderful idea, comment on that, too. With that said, here are the newest additions to the growing plugin family:

Happy birthday to meeeeee!

May 7th, 2005 Me

Hey, hey it’s my birthday! It’s hard to imagine that I’ve been on this crazy world for 27 years. Even more so since I’ve been going through a lot of the photo albums and pictures that I have since I was a youngin’. I’m working towards putting a gallery of images online, but I’ve been trying to get everything organized so that I can figure out what piece of software would be best suited for my needs. Scanning in all of the photos has been quite a chore, but it has also allowed me to look back on my life, the great times spent with family and friends, trips to new places, the blossoming of new relationships, the wedding of a lifetime, and all of the dangerous escapades. OK, not so many of those. ;)
